Potomac River Watershed Citizen Pledge

As a citizen residing in the Potomac River Watershed, I recognize the importance of the Potomac River and its tributaries to the region. These waters provide vital environmental, cultural, economic, and social benefits to our quality of life. These benefits, however, are severely impaired by the many forms of trash and litter carried by the Potomac and its tributaries.

I agree that trash/litter:

is a significant source of pollution on land and within our drinking water;
severely degrades the visual landscape and property values;
severely degrades the quality of life for the residents of the watershed;
is a major expense for taxpayers and our local, state, and federal governments; and
is preventable through greater individual responsibility and stewardship.

To improve dramatically the health and human enjoyment of rivers and streams of the Potomac River Watershed, I am committed to working with the Alice Ferguson Foundation and its partners for a Trash Free Potomac by 2013. I pledge to do my part by:

properly disposing of trash in a responsible manner;
picking up at least one piece of litter each day;
purchasing products made of recycled materials and with less packaging;
recycling at home, office, faith-based gatherings, school, and any public event;
using reusable shopping bags;
limiting my use of single-use beverage containers;
assisting my workplace in becoming a trash-free facility;
helping friends and neighbors to adopt the “Trash Free” goal, too; and
doing whatever is within my power to help achieve the goal of a Trash Free Potomac by 2013!
